EXPRESSION OF INTEREST IN THE CONDUCT OF LIVELIHOODS NEEDS ASSESMENT OPTIONS IN TWO (RAFINGORA AND HANYIN GWARI) GULLY/EROSION SITES IN NIGER STATE UNDER THE NIGERIA EROSION AND WATERSHED MANAGEMENT PROJECT (NEWMAP)

BACKGROUND
Nigeria erosion and watershed management project (NEWMAP) aims to reduce vulnerability to soil erosion in targeted sub-catchments. This eight years innovative, multi-sectorial project will finance state-led intervention to prevent and reverse land degradation, initially focusing on gully erosion sites that threaten infrastructure and livelihoods of members of erosion affected communities. The project currently includes 7 mover states, namely Anambra, Abia, Cross River, Edo, Enugu, Ebonyi and Imo, and recently additional 12 states has been added namely Delta, Oyo, Sokoto, Gombe, Plateau, Kogi, Kano, Akwa Ibom, Borno, Nassarawa, Katsina and Niger states.

The investments include a strategic combination of civil Engineering, Vegetative land management and other catchment protection measures and community-led adaptive livelihood initiatives. The sustainability of these investments will reinforced by strengthening institutions and information services across sectors and states, including support to improve governance, regulatory compliance , environmental monitoring, impact evaluation, catchment and land use planning, and to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to promote and implement climate resilient, low-carbon development.

DESCRIPTION OF THE SITES:

LOT 1-RAFIN GORA GULLY SITE

The rafin gora project is located within konta gora Local Government Area of Niger State. The project is located within the corners North West-10017’18.07”N, 5022’59,51”E; South West -10016’16.36”N, 5022’50.32”E; North East- 10017’12.48”N, 5023’53.16”E; and South East- 10016’16.97”N, 5023’54.64”E. the length of the Gully head is about 11m deep and 15m wide.

LOT 2 FUT HANYIN GWARI GULLY SITE

The FUT Hanyin Gwari Erosion site cut across 3 communities: Jikpan, Ketaren Gwari and Fadukpe. The Gully traverses Bosso/Chanchaga along Auwal Ibrahim road at latitudes 9038’52”N and Longitudes 6031’42”E.it runs through Okada road at lat/long 9038’32”N and 6031’41”E before terminating at ketaren Gwari ( Chanchaga). The length of the Gully is 4, 650m, perimeter 13823.90m, average width of gully 14.13m, maximum width 31.36m, maximum depth 5.59m. The site is accessible through multiple axis as it is within the state Capital.
